민수기 14장 불신앙과 반역의 대가

민수기 14장은 백성들이 가나안 땅을 정탐한 후 감히 점령할 엄두를 못 내겠다며 불신과 두려움에 광야에서 방황하는 내용이 주를 이룹니다. 당연히 하나님은 심판을 내리고 모세는 신실한 믿음으로 백성들을 설득하는 능력이 필요한 부분이겠죠.

 

이집트로 돌아가게 해 주세요

 

1.Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2. And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3. Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?" 4. And they said to one another, "Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt."

 

가나안 땅을 차지하지 못할 것 같은 두려움에 휩싸인 이스라엘 백성은 밤새도록 울면서 자기네들을 이집트로 돌아가게 해달라고 합니다. 그냥 쉬운 말로 다 필요 없고 당장 이집트로 돌아가게 해 줘!라고 항의를 한 것입니다.

 옷을 찢는 행위의 의미

 

5. Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6. And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7. and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8. If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it tous, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them." 10. Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord aooeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.

 

 

백성들은 불평과 불신으로 반란을 일으키는 와중에 정탐꾼으로 다녀왔던 누의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 자기들의 옷을 찢으며 절규합니다. 백성들을 향해 가나안은 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅입니다. 반드시 그리로 갈 수 있을 테니 안심하세요,라는 식으로 간청하고 모세와 아론은 하나님께 간구하는 자세, 즉 엎드려서 응답을 들어주십사 읍소합니다.

 

 

당시 자신의 옷을 찢는 행위는 슬픔과 분노를 표현하는 것이라는데요. 옛날에 아저씨들 막 화나면 자신의 웃통을 벗고 옷을 찢는 등의 행위를 했던 것과 같은 차원인 것 같습니다. 그러니까 이러한 표현은 아, 미치고 팔짝 뛰겠네. 가나안 땅이 좋으니까 걱정하지 말라고 우리가 반드시 차지할 거니 우리말을 믿으라고!!!라고 절규한 것 같죠?

 

  11. And the Lord said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12. I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."

 

그렇게 정탐꾼 두 명이 절규하면서 호소했지만 이스라엘 백성들의 분노는 멈추지 않고 이들을 돌로 치려고 합니다. 그러자 하나님이 나타나서 백성들을 가만두지 않으려고 하고 이 상황에서 모세는 적절한 중재를 한 것으로 보입니다.

 

 

 모세의 중재

 

13. But Moses said to the Lord, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14. and they will tell the inhabitants of this land.They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15. Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16.'It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.' 17. And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18. 'The LOrd is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.' 19. Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now."

 

이스라엘 백성들이 이렇게 나오니 화가 많으신 하나님은 아예 멸절을 해버리겠다고 니들 가만두지 않겠다고 엄포를 놓으십니다. 그러자 모세는 제발 백성들을 가엾이 여기셔 노여움을 푸소서, 합니다. 하나님께 자비와 인자를 강조하며 백성들의 죄를 용서해 달라고 하니 하나님이 이스라엘을 멸하지 않겠다고 하십니다. 그러면서 불순종의 대가로 이번 세대는 가나안 땅에 바로 들어가지 못하고 40년 동안 광야에서 방황하며 죽을 때까지 기다리겠다고 선언하십니다. 그러면서 여호수아와 갈렙만이 가나안 땅에 들어갈 수 있다는 축복을 받게 됩니다. 더불어 모세도 가나안 땅을 밟지 못하게 되죠.
