아론의 아들들을 단숨에 죽여버린 내용의 레위기 10장

레위기 10장은 객관적인 입장에서는 난데없이 아론의 두 아들들을 화마로 단숨에 죽여버리는 사건에 관한 것입니다. 이유는 허락되지 않은 기름을 사용했기 때문이라고 합니다. 이것이 시사하는 바는 하나님의 명령에 절대 복종 절대 순종을 강조하는 것입니다. 하나님은 관대하지 않고 무섭고 두려운 존재라는 것을 각인시키는 거죠.

 

 

아론의 아들 나답과 아비후의 갑작스러운 죽음

 

 

레위기 9장 읽기

불이 나타나 모두가 엎드려 경배한 레위기 9장

 

 

1. Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them.

2. And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.

3. Then Moses said to Aaron, " This is what the Lord has said, ' Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.'" And Aaron held his peace.

 

레위기 10장 1절은 몇 번이나 곱씹으면서 읽게 되었는데요. 워낙 순식간에 일어난 사건이라 무슨 일인가 싶었습니다. 제사장 아론과 아론의 장남과 차남은 자연스럽게 제사장 지위를 이어받아 창조주를 위해 번제물을 바치고 일련의 제례를 맡아서 하는 이들인데요.

 

 

 

정황상 이들이 향로에 향을 피우고 불을 붙이는 행위를 했음에도 난데없는 불길이 덮쳐 이들을 죽였다는 내용입니다. 불길이 이들을 덮쳐 죽인 것을 두고 3절에는 모세는 아론에게 내 곁에서 신성함을 유지하면 혹은 독실하면 거룩해질 거다 했더니 아론이 평화를 지켰다, 즉 평정심을 유지했다는 것으로 보이는데요. 어떻게 이런 일이 있을 수 있는지 신기하고 놀랍습니다.

 

이를 자세히 들여다보니 나답과 아비후는 주님 앞에 이상한 불 혹은 향을 올리다 죽임을 당한 것으로 보입니다. 뭔가 허락되지 않은 것, 불법적인 것, 불량한 것을 바치면 급살을 맞는다는 경각심을 주는 내용 같습니다. 이에 아들을 졸지에 잃은 아론도 할 말이 없었던 것이고, 저렇게 조금만 부정한 혹은 허락되지 않은 제를 올리는 아들들의 죽음을 눈앞에서 목도한 이상 아론도 억울함보다는 신에 대한 복종에 더 무게를 두지 않았을까 싶습니다. 너무 섬뜩하기도 하고 창조주는 어떤 분이시길래 그렇게 단박에 부정한 것을 구분하시는지 신기하기도 합니다. 

 

 

 

 

4. And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, " Come near, carry your brothers away from the front of the sanctuary and out of the camp."

5. So they came near and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.

6. And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar his sons, " Do not let the hair of your heads hang loose, and do not tear your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning that the Lord has kindled.

7. And do not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you." And they did according to the word of Moses.

 

 

 

 

3절에서 모세가 아론에게 정황 설명을 하면서 아론이 이해를 한 줄 알았더니 아론은 충격과 슬픔을 빠져 정신을 차리지 못했나 봅니다. 아무래도 그랬겠죠. 그래서인지 4절 모세가 아론의 삼촌인 웃시엘의 아들 엘르아셀과 이다말을 불러 죽은 형제들을 캠프 즉 성소 밖으로 데리고 나가라고 합니다. 그리고 모세는 아론과 그의 남은 아들에게 경고합니다.

 

 

 

 

 

그러면서 나라 잃은 표정으로 머리를 늘어 뜨리거나 웃을 찢는 등 삼촌 아론처럼 굴지 말라고 한 것 같습니다. 모세가 이들에게 경고한 것은 하나님의 말을 듣지 않음으로 인한 비탄은 할 지언정 불경한 죄를 지은 형제를 위해 넋을 놓지 말라는 의미로 읽힙니다. 그리고 회막 어귀 밖으로 나가지 않으면 죽음을 면하리라,라고 합니다. 내용이 정말로 두려움에 벌벌 떨릴 정도입니다. 그리고 이들은 모세의 말대로 행해서 죽음은 면한 것 같습니다.

 

 

 

 

 

성스러운 것과 부정한 것의 구별

 

8. And the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying, " Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of  meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations.

10. You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean,

11. and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses."

 

로드가 아론에게 말씀하십니다. 회막에 들어갈 때 와인이나 독한 술을 마시지 말라고 합니다. 아론과 아들들을 포함하여 그리하면 죽을 줄 알라고 하십니다. 그리고 이것은 세대에 걸쳐 영원한 법률로 제정합니다. 오늘날 수많은 종교 단체는 물론 굿을 하나 제사를 지내나 제를 올릴 때는 경건한 자세로 임하라는 것이 불문률처럼 여기게 된 이유겠죠. 

 

그러면서 일반적인 것과 성스러운 것의 구별을 잘해야 한다며 불경한 것과 깨끗한 것을 잘 구분하라고 하십니다. 이와 같은 법칙은 모세를 통해 이스라엘 백성 모두에게 널리 알리라고 하십니다. 

 

  12. Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his surviving sons: " Take the grain offering that is left of the Lord's food offerings, and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy.

13. You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons' due, from the Lord's food offerings, for so I am commanded.

14. But the breast that is waved and the thigh that is contributed you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you,  for they are given as your due and your sons' due from the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the people of Israel.

15. The thigh that is contributed and the breast that is waved they shall bring with the food offerings of the fat pieces to wave for a wave offering before the Lord, and it shall be yours and your sons' with you as a due forever, as the Lord has commanded."

 

 

 

모세는 이어서 살아남은 아들들에게 주에게 바친 제물 중 남은 곡식을 가져가라면서 제단 옆에 누룩을 넣지 않은 곡식 그것이 가장 성스러운 음식이라고 합니다. 그러면서 가장 성스러운 장소에서 그것을 너와 아들들이 먹고 그것이 임무라고 합니다.  또한, 가슴살이나 날개 부위 살은 아들과 딸이 골고루 나눠 먹으라고 영원한 의무이자 명령 그런 식으로 말하는데요. 참으로 흥미롭습니다.

 

그런데 한국에는 제사밥을 먹으면 3대가 재수가 없다느니 하면서 꺼려하는 전통도 있는 것 같고요. 그렇습니다만, 여하튼, 신을 위해 제를 올리는 방식과 태도 그리고 음식을 어디서 어떻게 먹어야 하는지까지 꼼꼼하게 나열한 부분이 인상적입니다. 옛날에 기독교인은 종교를 핑계로 한국 제사 문화를 꺼려하고 지내지도 않았는데요. 알고 보면 한국 제사 문화도 여기서 다 파생된 게 아닌가 싶을 정도입니다.

 

14절과 15절 비슷한 것 같은데요. 그냥 얼핏 읽히기엔 14절 퍽퍽한 살코기는 아들 딸 먹어도 무관하나 15절 다소 기름진 조금 더 먹기 좋은 부위는 아들들만 주는 것 같은 차별이 느껴지는데 아니면 말고요.

 

 

 어떤 게 불경한 것이고 불손한 것인지

 

 

16. Now Moses diligently enquired about the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it was burned up! And he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the surving sons of Aaron, saying,

17. " Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, since it is athing most holy and has been given to you that you may bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord?

18. Behold, its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary. You certainly ought to have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded."

19. And Aaron said to Moses, "Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, and yet such things as these have happened to me! If I had eaten the sin offering today, would the Lord have approved?"

20. And when Moses heard that, he approved.

 

도대체 창조주는 왜 그렇게 까다롭게 규례를 따지시는 지는 모르겠으나 절대복종과 절대 순종에 대한 기강을 잡는 차원에서 아론의 아들들을 본보기로 죽였던 모양입니다. 이에 아론은 먹어도 되는 희생 제물을 불에 태웠더니만 모세가 또 뭐라고 하고, 그러니 아론은 불에 태우거나 기름을 붓거나 이래도 죽였는데 저런 들 안 죽이겠느냐며 뭐라 한 것 같은데요. 마음이야 어떻든 아론은 창조주가 아론의 아들들을 죽인 것에 인정하고 더 잘하려는 과잉 충성을 보여서 그것이 규례에 다소 어긋나더라도 충심을 알기에 모세가 그냥 넘어간 건 아닌가 싶습니다. 

 

결론은 하나님 앞에 절대 복종과 절대 순종을 하라는 것 같습니다.
