민수기 11장 16절~고기 먹고 죽은 백성들?

민수기 11장 16절부터는 이스라엘 백성이 광야를 떠돌며 하나님께 고기를 달라고 떼를 쓰고 그에 응답하는 내용입니다. 고기를 대체할 메추라기 떼를 식량으로 주셨는데요. 어떤 내용일지 벌써부터 흥미진진하네요.

 

 

하나님의 명령 그리고 하나님의 정령

 

민수기 11장 1절에서 15절 해석

16. Then the Lord said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. 17. And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18. And say to the people, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat, for you have wept in the hearing of the Lord, saying, "Who will give us meat to eat? For it was better for us in Egypt." Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19. You shall not eat for just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, 20. but for a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the Lord who is among you and have wept before him, saying, "Why did we come out of Egypt?" 21. But Moses said, "The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand on foot, and you have said, ' I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month!' 22. Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, and be enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, and be enough for them?" 23. And the Lord said to Moses, "Is the Lord's hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not."

 

 

모세가 하늘을 원망하자 하나님이 장로들에게 자신의 정령을 씌워서 모세의 수고를 덜어주겠다는 뉘앙스로 말하는 것 같습니다. 그런데  정령을 씌우다는 비유적 표현이 참으로 의미심장하게 느껴집니다. 장로들에게 직접적으로 얘기해서 모세를 도와라한 것도 아니고 정령을 씌운다는 것은 뭔가 주술적, 혹은 마력을 쓴 것처럼 느껴지기도 하고요. 어떤 영적인 능력 그러니까 영혼을 뒤바꿀 수도 있다는 것인가 싶어서 말입니다.

 

 

그리고 백성들이 고기를 먹고 싶다고 불평하자 하나님은 모세에게 고기를 주겠다고 하고 모세는 하루이틀도 아니고 잠깐 먹일 고기를 주시는 거냐고 하니 하나님이 질리도록 먹게 해 주겠다고 말씀합니다. 그러자 모세는 가당키나 하냐는 식으로 되묻고 하나님은 일종의 경종을 울리듯 먹게 해 주시겠다고 합니다. 하나님 성격도 만만치 않은 분 같긴 합니다만 하나님을 먼저 도발한 것은 모세와 백성들이겠죠.

 

 장로들에게 영을 나눠주다

24. So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them round the tent. 25. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Sprit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

 

약속대로 하나님은 장로들에게 영을 나눠주었는데요. 이것을 기독교에는 임재라고 표현하는 것 같더라고요. 무당으로 따지면 신이 내렸다는 의미인 건가 싶은데요. 70명의 장로들에게 일종의 장로 타이틀을 주며 권위만 준 것이 아닌 어떤 능력까지 겸비하게 했다는 것인데 그것을 가지고 정령을 씌우다고 표현한 것이 생각할수록 신기합니다. 특별한 능력은 일종의 리더십이나 지혜를 하사한 것으로 보이는데요.

 

 

책임과 권한을 주면 사람이 의젓해지는 것처럼 그런 능력조차 하나님의 업그레이드 혹은 정령을 씌운 덕분인가 봅니다. 그런데 또 그렇게 보기만은 어려운 것이 하나님이 주신 능력으로 장로들은 일회성으로 예언을 하나씩 했다고 합니다. 이게 무슨 일인가요. 정령을 씌운다는 것이 혹시 특수한 마약 같은 것을 먹인 게 아니었나 그래서 순간적으로만 특별한 능력을 발휘한 것이 아닌가 싶기도 하고, 그냥 하나님이 70명의 장로를 통해 특별한 하나님의 능력을 증명해 보이도록 하기 위한 장치를 마련했거나 어찌 되었건 신기합니다.

 

 성막이 아닌 진영에서 예언을 한 두 사람

26. Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27. And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." 28. And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, "My lord Moses, stop them." 29. But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Sprit on them!" 30. And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

 

하나님이 장로들에게 영적인 능력을 주어 일회성으로 예언을 하게 하였지만 이들의 특별한 능력은 하나님이 존재함을 증명하는 차원에서였지 개인의 우월함을 강조하기 위함이 아니었나 봅니다. 그래서 장로들이 예언을 하는 장소는 신성한 성막에서 이루어져야 할 일이었지만 유독 엘다드와 메다드는 성막이 아닌 사람들의 임시 거주지인 진영 안에서 하게 됩니다. 그러자 하나님이 이를 금지하였고, 이러한 행동에 모세는 다른 말을 하게 됩니다. 

 

 

이것이 조금 헷갈리는 부분인데요. 하나님이 성막 안에 있는 장로들에게 예언의 능력을 주셨는데 진영 안의 두 사람에게도 그런 능력을 받아 이들이 예언을 하고 있었는데요. 하나님은 이러다 사람들이 저 두 사람에게 신뢰가 쏠려 모세를 존중하지 않으면 어쩌나 싶어 예언을 말렸다고 합니다. 그러자 모세는 오히려 하나님 괜찮습니다. 모두가 선지자가 되어야 한다고 하셨으니 전 질투하지 않으니 예언을 하게 두십시오, 라며 쿨한 반응을 보였다는 내용 같습니다.

키브로스 하타아와에서 있던 일은 위 포스팅을 참조하시고요. 백성들이 탐욕을 부린 대가로 벌을 받은 곳이 키브로스 하타아와라고 하면 하세롯에서는 지도자의 엄벌이 자행되는 사건이 발생합니다.

 

 

31. Then a wind from the Lord sprang up, and it brought quail from the sea and let them fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, round the camp, and about two qubits above the ground. 32. And the people rose all that day and all night and all the next day, and gathered the quail. Those who gathered least gathered ten homers. And they spread them out for themselves all round the camp. 33.While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck down the people with a very great plague. 34. Therefore the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had the craving. 35. From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth, and they remained at Haxeroth.

 

하나님이 보내주신 메추라기를 처묵처묵하다 병에 걸려 죽은 백성들에 이어서 백성들이 하세롯으로 이동하는데 그 과정에서 모세의 형 아론과 누나 미리암이 모세의 리더십에 대한 불평을 했는가 봅니다. 그전에 메추라기에 관해서 얘기하자면, 왜 하필 메추라기 떼를 보내주셨을까 하는 의구심이 들었는데요. 메추라기는 강력한 바람을 타고 이동하는 경향이 있는데 봄과 가을에 수천 마리의 메추라기 떼가 이동하는 시기와 맞닿은 것으로 볼 수도 있을 것 같습니다.

 

하나님이 시기를 앞당겼거나 강력한 바람을 일으켰거나 시기가 묘묘하긴 합니다. 아무튼, 다음 사건은 하나님께서 미리암에게 벌을 내리는데요. 이는 민수기 12장에 자세히 나와있지만 대략 요약하자면, 미리암에게 죽지는 않았지만 나병 즉 한센병에 걸리게 하여 7일 동안 격리 조치를 하게 됩니다. 모세는 하나님께 사정사정하여 7일 후에 병이 나았다고는 합니다. 걸린 것도 신기하고 나은 것도 신기합니다. 현대 의학에서는 한센병에 걸리면 완치가 가능하지만 당시에 나병은 매우 심각한 질병으로 완치가 힘든 것으로 알려졌는데요. 그래서 더욱 신비하고 놀라운 것 같습니다.
